The President''s Memorial Day Message

 

Today is the day we commemorate the sacrifice made by soldiers

of the United States of America  while in military service.

As the President of the Republic of Korea,

I would like to pay my honor to the men and women in uniform

who fought for world peace, freedom and democracy.
 

Koreans will never forget the 33,000 American Soldiers

who sacrificed their lives to uphold freedom and peace during the Korean War.

 

It is only because of the sacrifice made by them

that the people of Korea are now enjoying the democracy and economic development of today.

Even as I speak, American Forces stationed in Korea,

led by General Walter Sharp, are guarding the peace and security on the Korean Peninsula.

 

On behalf of all Koreans, I would like to convey my warmest gratitude to them.
There have been concerns over the security on the Korean Peninsula and in Northeast Asia,

with North Korea’s recent launch of a long-range rocket.

But I believe we are able to counter this with the security alliance

between Korea and the US, which has been stronger than ever.

 

As we always have, we will see eye to eye with each other and move towards a common goal.

The commitment to the bilateral cooperation and alliance will once again be confirmed at the summit

between our two countries scheduled for this June.

The two countries of Republic of Korea and the United States of America, while deepening our ties,

will also extend full support on the international stage in efforts to maintain world peace and deter terrorism.

This will be our way of paying tribute to the sacrifice made by the countless men and women in uniform.
While I solemnly pay my respects to the sacrifice of the former generation of soldiers,

I would also like to take this opportunity to wish all the members of the American Forces in Korea and their families the best.

오늘은 미합중국 전몰장병들의
숭고한 희생을 기리는 뜻 깊은 날입니다.

 

대한민국 대통령으로서,
세계의 자유와 평화 그리고 민주주의 수호를 위해
고귀한 생명을 바친 분들의 명복을 빕니다.

 

특히 6.25 전쟁 당시
이 땅의 자유와 평화를 위해 산화한
3만 3천여 미군장병들의 숭고한 희생을
우리는 영원히 기억할 것입니다. 

 

이들의 헌신과 희생이 있었기에
우리는 자유민주주의를 지켜내고 
비약적인 경제 성장을 이루어 낼 수 있었습니다.

 

그리고 이 순간에도 한국의 안보와 평화를 위해
헌신하고 있는 월터 샤프(Walter Sharp) 사령관 이하
모든 주한미군 장병들에게
우리 국민과 더불어 아낌없는 치하와 감사를 드립니다.

지금 북한의 장거리 로켓 발사와 도발위협 등으로
한반도와 동북아 안보의 불안은 심화되고 있습니다.

 

그러나 한미 양국의 안보동맹과 협력관계는
어느 때 보다도 확고하며 긴밀합니다.
늘 그래왔듯, 양국은 같은 곳을 보고 함께 행동할 것입니다.

오는 6월 양국 정상회담을 통해
이런 한미동맹의 공고함은 다시 한 번 확인될 것입니다.

앞으로 양국은 신뢰의 기반 속에
한미동맹을 더욱 발전시키면서,
국제평화 유지활동ㆍ대테러작전 등에서
실질적 협력과 공조를 강화해 나갈 것입니다.

 

그것이 한반도와 세계의 평화를 위하고
귀중한 생명을 바친 전몰 용사들의 거룩한 희생에
보답하는 길이라고 생각합니다.

 

경건한 마음으로 용사들의 거룩한 희생을 추모하면서,
주한미군 장병과 가족 모두에게
신의 가호와 축복이 함께 하기를 기원합니다.
